Veronica's Rancho Las Lomas Wedding

We pulled into Rancho Las Lomas and to the left there was white tigers! Aaahhhh!!! Then a little further, parrots, then zebras! We parked and unloaded our things to the site of a beautiful ceremony location. We did the hair & makeup in the cutest little bridal suite. There were alpacas behind us by the way. This place is unbelievable. Hidden in Silverado Canyon in Orange County, I don't know why I haven't heard about this location before.

Jennifer contacted me a couple days before her Disney Wedding. Her hair dresser couldn't make it. I actually hear this a lot. Jennifer was a little freaked out as you would imagine. But we were fortunate to come to her rescue. We did her and her bridal parties hair only as Jen did her own makeup. I have to say, I am quiet impressed with what she did! The ceremoney took place at the Disney Rose Court Garden and the Reception followed at the Grand Californian.

Reflecting on the Last Year... Happy New Year!

Well it is January 2nd, Watching the Rose Parade (a little weird it not being the First). I am thinking about the year to come. I don't think I have ever been so excited about a New Year. Last Year was pretty incredible as far as Fairytale Hair and Makeup is concerned. I only see this year getting better! I wanted to take this minute to reflect on the past year...

I started Fairytale Hair and Makeup January 1st 2003. We have continued to expand. Being the home to some of the most amazing, talented hair & makeup artists in California, Las Vegas, Central Florida & now Hawaii!

The economy has definitely taken its toll on the wedding industry. And as important as hair & makeup is on the wedding day, it is usually one of the first things to go. So the fact that we are still here. Bigger than ever, is pretty awesome. I still need to do all the figures for the past year. But by looking back, I would say our website hits and business was up at least 25%.

We started the year Winning "Best of Weddings 2011" By the Knot for Los Angeles County. This was huge for us. It was the first year the Knot added Beauty to their "Best Of" Awards. To win this when there are so many other companies popping up left and right is a true honor. When we started in 2003, there was only a few companies that specialize in mobile bridal hair & makeup. Not the wedding industry is very saturated. I like to think we started a trend :).

We recorded our first episode of "My Fair Wedding" With David Tutera on Febuary 6th. I was so excited to be apart of this show. I consider it to be the top wedding show on tv. So I sacrificed watching the Super Bowl to have a day on the set. What an awesome experience. The Theme was Belly Dancer Bride. We only did the hair for the episode. But it was a great start. We also helped set up the reception site. TV does not do his work justice. Truly amazing.

Our work with Disney continued to grow also as we were officially added to the Walt Disney World Preferred Vendor list. There is 10 companies on their list, as they do around 1500 weddings a year. We are very excited to be apart of the Disney Fairy Tale Wedding Experience. To me, there is no higher testimonial, honor than to be referred to from a company like Disney. They have the highest standards for their clients, and it shows! This year at the Disneyland Resort we became the ONLY preferred hair & makeup vendor for Disneyland Resorts Fairy Tale Weddings. This is my dream come true! I have spent a lot of time there this past year.

We have also had the honor of working with some of the top award winning wedding professionals in the industry. Percy Sales Events, Felici Events, Ariel Yve, Soigne Productions, Beverly Hills Photography, Katie Keller Photography, The Canary Hotel Santa Barbara, and so much more!

We were also contacted by "My Fair Wedding" to participate in the new season. We had a chance to do 5 episodes! David has said to us that " I wish you could do all of them." "I never have to worry when you do the hair and makeup, it always comes out perfect." He tweeted about us and emailed me personally this testimonial:

With the opening of the Disney's Aulani Resort in Hawaii, I decided to start expanding to Hawaii. This is going to be one of my main focuses for 2012. There is such a huge wedding market in Hawaii, Fairytale needs to be apart of it! We started Fairytale Hawaii in October.

As far as 2012, I am anticipating a busier year than ever. I continue to strive to make Fairytale the best Bridal Hair & Makeup company in the industry. Fairytale is my life. It is all I do as well as being a single mom of my little Fairytale, Catalina.
What means the most to me is hearing the reviews and testimonials from out clients & vendors raving about what a great impact we had on their event. It is also my goal to have a company that artists want to work for. Provided and excellent, top of the line service without charging a bundle. We all truly love what we do. When you love what you do, I believe money is secondary. We all have to survive. But there is really no price tag to doing what you love and being passionate about.

I have received several messages from our team members thanking me for having them be apart of the team. This means so much to me. Having a place that people want to work, that helps them grow on their own right is pretty magical. I wanted to share a couple things team members have told me:

It was a busy day at the Disneyland Resort on 11-11. They had 7 weddings at the Resort, 11 in Disney World, and 4 at the Aulani in Hawaii! That's 11 Weddings on the West Coast, 11 on the East for the Disney Fairy Tale Wedding World!

Here at Disneyland, there was a chance of rain! But miracles happened and the rain held off! Anita and her now husband came to the Disneyland Hotel for their 11-11-11 wedding from Alaska.

Anita and her bridesmaids, mother in law and flower girl started getting ready around 6 am. They were one of the easiest weddings I have ever done. They pretty much said "What ever you want to do!" And were very happy with everything!

Well, it is that time of year we give thanks to the people and things that you are grateful for. I realize every day how blessed I am. I think it is very important to point out my appreciation.

First of all, I am most grateful for my beautiful daughter, Catalina. She is my Fairytale. There is no job harder yet more rewarding than being a single mom. But I wouldn't change it for anything. I am thankful for my family that help me with my daughter so I am able to do what I am passionate about, which I call my career.

I am very fortunate to have some amazing friends. We talk every day. We can say whatever we want, look any way.... they are still there. They truly are my sanity. Thank you for not judging me and my sometimes bad decisions ;), for sticking by me and being there no matter what I do. For not leaving the table in embarrassment when I am putting the FUN in Funeral. lol

Fairytale Hair and Makeup is my life. It has become far bigger and better than I ever imagined. I am looking forward to seeing where it goes next. There is no other job for me. This is my dream job, my passion. The fact that I can be a hair & makeup artist, work with amazing vendors/ companies such as Disney, run a company and stay home to raise my child is pretty awesome.

This year a lot of exciting things happened with Fairytale. Such a dream come true. We officially got on the preferred vendor list for Walt Disney World. Where we now are taking part in their 1500 weddings they do a year. In February we did the hair for our first reality wedding show in "My Fair Wedding." We were then asked to come back the following season. We completed five episodes for Season 5. We received much praise from David Tutera himself. A true honor.

Fairytale expanded to Oahu, Hawaii in September. Looking forward to growing in Hawaii and hopefully working with the Aulani, a new Disney resort.

We have had the privileged in working with countless brides & their entourages. Thank you so very much to our clients for choosing us. If it wasn't for you, we obviously wouldn't be here. Thank you for your reviews, photos, continued support and for being apart of the Fairytale Bride clan ;).

Another highlight to the year, Mary, a bride of mine. She just graduated cosmetology school. She said I inspired her to go because she wants others for feel as beautiful as she did on her wedding day.

All this success and growing wouldn't be possible with out an amazing team. Highly talented, qualified artists that make me breath easy. Helping our artists succeed on their own is also very important to me. I have received several messages from Fairytale team members thanking me for having them be apart of the team. I have a few artists that say, "If it wasn't for you, I wouldn't be where I am today, Thank you." This means the world to me.

I wanted to say thank you's to members of our team:
Adri- For being a pretty awesome assistant, for saving me, and dealing with me :)
Rich- For saving me and always ready to get your curl on!
Jackie- Running it in Central Florida, thank you for dealing with my craziness.

All I can say is "Wow!" This bride was meticulous about every detail for her wedding. They did not want a traditional Disney Wedding. The wedding was on the Wedding Lawn. There was about 200 guests that were then led to the Brissa Courtyard at the Grand Californian escorted by the USC marching band for cocktail hour. From there they went over to Stage 17 at Disney's Grand Californian for dinner & dancing led by a band and of course Mickey & Minnie! The guests also got a private showing of "World Of Color."

Got to love female cops. They can be tough on the job, but such a beautiful princess on their special day. Melissa had a definite vision of the look she wanted for her Oxnard wedding. The hair & makeup was done for all her bridesmaids, whom wore red dresses. Her hair, which we added some clip in extensions had cascading curls in a long semi- up do. The makeup we emphasized the eyes with black liner and false lashes. Her photographer was a friend/ co-worker. I love the pictures!!! Embassy Suites Mandalay Beach Resort in Oxnard is one of my favorite places for a wedding, great location, great picture opportunities.

Matt & Pebbles came from Arizona to have their Fairytale Wedding at Disneyland. We had the honor to attend the wedding and ceremony as well as do the hair & makeup for Pebbles, the moms and all her bridesmaids.

Her bridesmaids all wore short purple dresses, sooo cute! The ceremony took place at the Rose Court Garden at the Disneyland Hotel. She came up in the Cinderella coach to say I Do to her prince. The reception followed at the Sleeping Beauty Pavilion.

The got to stay in the Pirates of the Caribbean Suite! Where I came back the following day at 3 am to do her hair and makeup for their castle photo shoot.

Pebbles also gave me (Tara), the most amazing sweatshirt she made with my name and it says "Making Fairytale's Come True" on the back. I LOVE it! Since her wedding, she has opened her own Etsy store selling lots of the things she made for her own wedding!

Lindze's Big Day in Ventura

Lindze learned of Fairytale Hair and Makeup from her work, Love HEals Jewelery in Ojai. We had done a Green photo shoot with their jewelery and she loved the hair & makeup. Lindsay has the most amazing hair (no extensions needed), and a fabulous personality :). She had a theme of butterflies. They were everywhere. In the hair, in the flowers, everywhere.

For their big day her and her bridal party got ready at the Embassy Suites Mandalay Beach Resort. Then were off to the Cross on the hill in Ventura for the ceremony. For the reception she chose CandleLight Restaurant in Downtown Ventura. A favorite place for her and her man to go out. She couldn't wait to dance the night away.

It was always my dream to get married under the castle at Disneyland. Ariving in Cinderellas carriage to say "I Do" to my Prince Charming. Fireworks overhead after we are pronounced husband and wife. Well chances are, this won't happen for me but it was a dream come true to take part in the wedding of my dreams.

Brettainy was recommend to me by her coordinator at Disney's Fairy Tale Weddings. We met for a trial at the Grand Californian, and hit if off immediately. I had to know all the details. As her reality was my dream come true. Brettainy and Kyle are from Canada. So I was thinking as we were talking, she may have a couple open seats she already had to pay for if I can be a seat filler. She said, "why don't I just put you on the list?!" I about cried. Needless to say, she loved her hair & makeup trial and booked for her magical day!

September 23rd rolled around, we arived at the Grand. Did the hair & makeup. Then got ready for the big event! They had to wait for Disneyland to be completely closed and every last guest to be gone before we were escorted down Main Street to our seats in front of the castle. Her bridesmaids came down in a fire truck, trumpetteers played and gorgeous Brettainy came down in Cinderella's Coach. Her and Kyle said there I Do's, then fireworks went off overhead. AMAZING! They went off in the carriage as the guests were escorted to Fantasyland for cocktails and hordorves. There were a few rides open too! Unbelievable.

And hour or so later we were escorted to in front of Small World where the dinner buffet, DJ was. Was an amazing wonderful night. That truly was a dream come true!

What got me into the esthetics field is a long, long story, which starts with “I was originally in the video post production field...,” winds its way to “I’m also an aspiring actress” to “I needed a new career that I’m passionate about, can grow in, and have a flexible schedule.” Skincare and energy healing always peaked my interest, so naturally, being a facialist (the most calming of the esthetics business) is what I became drawn to. By the end of my facials, not only will your skin will be glowing, but you will be as relaxed and refreshed as you can be!

Brazilian Keratin Treatment

We have added the Brazilian Keratin Treatment to our list of services. It is the hot thing right now! I wanted to share and experience from one of our happy clients.

- My hair is INCREDIBLE. Normally I spend 30-40 minutes on my hair just to get it to look presentable, now I can literally “wash & go”. If I want it to look fancy, I can style it…but I don’t have to anymore. It looks better now for me to wash & go, than it did after spending time blowing & straightening & using product in the past.

- No damage to hair. It is softer & smoother than ever

- I just use a L’oreal shampoo & conditioner that is sulfate-free. I get it at Target and it’s super cheap (Maybe $5 or $6 a bottle?). The stuff they recommend is about $45 total for the shampoo & conditioner. That is not in my budget. LOL

- The first few days of your blowout, you can brush & straighten your hair…but you can’t wash it. the longer you wait to wash it the longer it will last. Its like a mask that sits on your hair. I made it to 60 hours before I washed it. I now wash my hair every other day and I maintain my style…apparently doing that makes it last longer! I have heard it can last 4 months. I will let you know ;-)

- I had contacted a few other stylists about getting this done & was always quoted at least $400 (sometimes more) for the treatment…but her fees are really good. She charges $250 and you get $50 off for every referral you send. So IF you and Lauren do it together, she might let you do it for $200 each because you referred each other? HAHA!

- She will come to your house and do it there, so you don’t have to deal with a salon. It can be a long process so it’s nice to be in your house for it!

- It is SO WORTH IT. the Money that I save on styling products & time turns out to be the same as I will pay for the treatment every 4 months. So I am definitely going to upkeep it. I have never been happier with my hair.

Celebrity Hair & Makeup Artist

My first job at a salon was right on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills at the Prestigious Jose Eber Salon. I was always pretty star struck. That who scene and life was fascinating to me. The Salon has a huge celebrity following. They even have a VIP room where the celebs could slip in and out without being noticed. Here I was taught to treat them just like anyone else. I started out assisting Elizabeth Taylor's hairdresser. She was very star struck meeting Liz. Liz could tell how in awe she was. She told her, "I go to the bathroom, just like anyone else dear." My point is, it is very true. They ordinary people with extraordinary jobs. What still gets me is how everyone in the country, if not the world, knows who they are. They have all the money in the world. They could have anyone in the world do their hair or makeup. But somehow they have chosen me.

I feel the same way about a bride. It is the biggest day of their life. And how lucky, honored I am to be doing their hair & makeup. I treat everyone equally. I charge the same no matter who it is. Don't judge a book by its cover. A lot of the times, I didn't know who I was working on. And they were a millionaire- billionaire or a celebrity.

Beverly Hills led me to 10 years in Malibu where my list of celebrities, "big- wigs" grew. I had a great reputation. Which definitely came in handy for my Baby Shower which looked like something in a Hollywood Magazine.

I have always been very coy about who I have done. But it is usually the first question I get asked by clients. I find most of them want to be treated just like anyone else.

There are over 30 rehabs in Malibu. And many of the prestigious ones ($40,000- $60,000 a month), would come in once a week for salon day. This was a never ending cycle of celebs. Some of the huge stars even had us up at the facility for their beauty needs. I can't really talk about who and what in rehab. But it is really fascinating the stories. Rehab people I think were the coolest, most down to earth. Loved it!

Wedding Day Priorities

So of all people, I was talking with my merchant credit card company. They were asking about my business with this great economy. As you can assume, just like most luxuries hair and makeup is usually one of the first things to go. Or the client thinks they can just have a friend do it. It is understandable. But then the client thinks, since I am not spending the money there... I can get a great photographer or an amazing dress. But the truth is... If you hair and makeup isn't done right... No photographer can correct that. And you dress is secondary to what the bride looks like. So my merchant wrote me a little something about her opinion on this matter.....

Getting ready for the perfect wedding, perfect flowers, perfect dress, perfect photographer, perfect everything. Yet the first thing anyone looks at is the face of the bride, that is the focal point. Is that a day to leave it to chance? As every star knows, perfect makeup and hair can make or break the best outfit or photo. While I may have less flowers or a simpler dress, my makeup and hair have to be perfect- no running make up, no "off color" that doesn't go with the undertones of the dress, no unflattering photos because the makeup is not camera friendly, no hair falling apart. Any of those things can totally ruin the hard work put in making this a day that will be remember forever as perfect. Considering that it's probably the most important and least expensive of all the preparations- isn't it silly to leave it to chance? Many of the guests will have their hair done before the wedding (I always do before going to an event), shouldn't the bride - the star of the show- deserve the same on her very, very special day?

Tara's Story

I, Tara Fontana, was born and raised in Ventura, California. Which is about an hour north of Hollywood. Raised by a single mom who is a hairdresser. I grew up in a salon, answering phones, helping out my mom. She worked at a kids salon. A place called Lucy in the Sky. A really cool place for kids to come get their haircut. Just like most kids, I wanted to be a singer. The next Madonna. Well, I fortunatly realized I couldnt sing but had always liked doing hair. Braiding was my thing. All my barbies, dolls, etc. had braids in their hair. I was so good at braiding that a bride asked me to do a braid on her hair when I was only eight years old.

I went to Ventura High. Was a cheerleader, On student body, spirit club president. I wanted to make high school like the movie "Grease". Well, I guess it came close. I started working at the Doubletree in Ventura when I was 16. That was a fun job. I worked everything in the hotel. And got $25 room rates for other Doubletree's. What a great time. Following graduation, I attended Lu Ross Academy. Got my cosmetology license a year later. That's when I quit working at the Doubletree. I was there for three years.

My dad is in the Entertainment Industry. Which my original goal was to see my name in credits for hairstylist. My first job as a cosmetologist was at Jose Eber on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. Not a bad place to start. I didn't stay there very long due to the two hour commute each way. I also felt there, I really couldn't be myself.

So I decided I just needed to go for it. I started at a salon in Thousand Oaks. Where I no longer assisted. I had a chair, and did my own clients. During my time there I went and took some classes. I went to the "On Set" Studio hair program. Which was a week 40 hour course on how to do hair for the studios. Wigs, styling, script breakdowns, period work, the union, and what to expect being a hair stylist in the motion picture industry. Following that course I took a course on studio makeup. I never was much of a makeup artist but it is always better if you can do both hair and makeup than just hair. We learned fantasy, aging, special effects, diseases, wounds, and beauty makeup. I was able to do some cool things come Halloween! I worked in Thousand Oaks for about 8 months, then went closer to home to Oxnard for another 8 months. Then it was time for me to figure out where I wanted to be. I always wanted to live in LA growing up. So I landed at a busy salon in Malibu. I was pretty busy right off the bat. I also got a celebrity clientele that before I would have thought was pretty amazing. A couple years into my stay in Malibu I came up with this idea. I was know in Malibu for the "Queen up the updo, the best blowdry in town." I would book out for prom six months in advance. That was my favorite day. But I wanted to do more! Light bulb goes off. Why dont I start going to brides on their wedding day and do their hair? So I put together a website. Talked with a friend that was a makeup artist, and got a booth at the LA bridal show. The response was overwhelming. So I advertised. Started getting bookings. So many that I couldnt take them all. So I started hiring artists with the same passion for weddings and a talent to do wedding hair & makeup. Once that was all working, I went to Vegas. I hired a group girls there in 2003. One of them, Amelia. She has been my savior. I like to think we have helped each other to grow. Vegas was a goldmine. So once that was going, I set my sights on Northern California. Some parts there I am finding it hard to find good people.

I am also a Disney fanatic. With my love for weddings. I am a girl that has always dreamed of her own Fairytale Wedding. In high school. I took marriage and family. We had to plan our own wedding. Mine was at Disney of course. It couldn't be anywhere else. I still feel that way to this day. I wanted to also work at Disneyland. Whouldnt it be soo cool to be Roger Rabbit? Well that didn't happen. Since I haven't had my Disney Fairytale wedding, why don't I work with other brides that are living my dream? Kind of funny. So I was persistent with Disney. Next thing I knew, I got a call from them wanting to know if I still wanted to be their preferred hair & makeup vendor. My goal! My dream! This was in 2006. I have seen some amazing Disney weddings. And feel so very fortunate to live up to Disney's standards for them to keep refering me their clients. I was told by one of their coordinators, "why would I send them anywhere else, with you it lasts all day and they are always happy." That means the world to me.

Also in 2006, I welcomed the birth of my daughter, Catalina Rose. She is my Fairytale princess. I am doing it being a single mom all the way. I am very fortunate that my career/ company gives me the opportunity to be a full time stay at home mom. As well as continue to do what I love... weddings. I think I even love it more now. its like my time off. Girl time. I quit the salon life in 2008. I was done working for someone. Put it this way, the boss I had taught me how not to be. I want people to want to work for me. Get paid what they think and deserve to get paid. What would I be willing to go out there and work for? And in doing my research my Fairytale fairies are compensated more than any other company. Therefore they are happy to be apart of Fairytale.

Since Fairytale started in 2002, I have witnessed sooo many different weddings and issues. I will be blogging about them as I go. I really probably could write a book. I have met some amazing people and some bridezilla's.

My dream for Fairytale is to continue to grow (We have had the privilege to work with probably close to a thousand brides). To meet and work with other hair & makeup artists with the same passion and talent. I want us to be a step above the rest. And for our clients to be completely happy they chose us. So they will refer us to their friends and family. I have created a Facebook for Fairytale so I can keep in touch with our brides. My favorite thing of all? To see the pictures of the wedding and to hear the brides happy comments. That is my biggest reward.
